This is Gen 5 Fertility

There really is no other place quite like it.

It’s a place of peace. A place of hope. A place where the “impossible” becomes possible. It's a place where your dreams become our dreams. And together we work to make them happen.

It is a place directed by one of the leading fertility specialists in the world. It's a place offering a group of fertility procedures offered by no other center.

A place where every member of the staff is dedicated to you.

A place where the best equipment, the best protocols, the best staff come together to create something amazing.

Gen 5 Fertility is where so many babies have come from. And if we work together, it's quite likely where your baby will begin her or his precious life.

Because we believe that everyone should live a fertile life.

16 July 2018

That's the day everything changed in the field of infertility. The day that everything that had been done in the past was just that – in the past. Done. Tired.

The day that Generation 4 IVF became available in the United States. Generation 4 IVF not only gives couples with a poor prognosis a chance to become pregnant, it dramatically increases the effectiveness and usefulness of IVF for those with a good prognosis.

Did the old ways sometimes work? Sure. Did parents get the babies they wanted? Sometimes. Did all those that deserved a chance get a chance? No.

Generation 4 IVF is a whole new way of looking at infertility and IVF. It's a new way of looking at why patients choose to do IVF and what they want to achieve as a result of doing IVF. It provides new ideas about the causes of "infertility" and about how to treat them.

With Generation 4 IVF, everything changes.

By the way, did all this really start in 2018? No. It's beginnings can be traced to a time over 25 years ago when what is now called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) first became clinically useful. Initially, the results were available only for a few rare disorders that were found virtually always in males. Over time, PGD became useful for many disorders involving single genes (like sickle cell disease).

Eventually, what was (and for some, still is) called Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS, now PGT-A) began. It started by looking at a few and then all chromosomes and answered the question: are the right number of chromosomes present in this embryo (fertilized egg)? An example is Down Syndrome in which there are three rather than two copies of chromosome 21. The technologies available have now become much more accurate and comprehensive and now Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using laser biopsied blastocysts is considered the state-of-the art way to answer questions such as these.

These techniques are considered Generation 3 of IVF. Unfortunately, many fertility centers around the world either legally can't or have chosen not to offer even this generation of IVF.

Over the next few weeks, we will give you more details of the present state of IVF and what we are doing to begin the long needed advance into Generation 4 IVF.

The Gen 5 Fertility Difference

We started Gen 5 Fertility because we knew we had to try to fix all the problems we had seen in fertility care over many years. All the things that make the fertility process more difficult than it should be. All the things that reduce each patient's chance of becoming pregnant. Our goal is simple: Treat each clients the way they deserve to be treated -- that includes using the treatments and treatment protocols that will maximize their chance of success.

Each patient is different. Each patient deserves care designed specifically for them in order to do the best they can do. Our protocols are unique to each patient and change according to dynamic hormonal, ultrasound and other information. At no point are patients placed on a "standard protocol." At no point are patients told that their retrieval will be done on a given day. Each woman has her own way of responding. We listen. That's the way is should be.

Led by two of the leading fertility specialists in the world, Samuel Wood, M.D., Ph.D. and Scott Sills, M.D., Ph.D., the care patients receive involves the most advanced procedures and protocols available anywhere. Gen 5 Fertility's protocols are unique. Although the physicians at Gyn 5 Fertility have trained many in their techniques over the years, they continue to evolve and so only their patients receive the finest in care. The ultrasound monitoring of all patients is performed only by a fertility specialist. Never by an "assistant." Never. All eligible patients are given the chance to select Generation 4 (and soon, Generation 5) procedures, and all patients receive the cumulative benefit of the knowledge that arises from the experience of treating thousands of patients over a quarter of a century. In addition to Dr. Wood, Dr. Sills is not only an outstanding fertility specialist, he also directs the ever expanding range of research endeavors at the Gen 5 Fertility Center. Among these is research into the potential rejuvenating effects of a groundbreaking new procedure that involves the infusion of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the ovaries.

We believe our staff is the best anywhere. Not only are they highly experienced and competent, they share our dream of provided low-stress care so that patients can fully understand everything and are able to reach their full fertility potential. All staff understand fertility deeply and have been trained specifically by Dr. Wood and Dr. Sills to insure they are not negatively affected by any suboptimal pre-treatment or treatment protocols they may have learned in the past.

Can You Become a Patient Now?

Perhaps. We are seeing many patients who have waited a very long time for the type of care we provide, care they believe they can receive no where else. Many of them have now become pregnant.

Most of our new patients come to us either by referral or invitation. However, if you have a special situation, perhaps you’ve failed at another fertility center, for example, please send us a message using the form to the right. We will read your message and contact you.

Soon all patients will be able to become part of the Gen 5 Fertility family. Do not give up hope.

Our Outstanding Staff

Our staff is unique. Each of them is exceptional. Each of them is highly experienced. Each has worked with at least one other fertility center. But each knew things could be done better, so much better. And each had many ideas about how to make things better. Each has the freedom to explore their ideas. Each is valued as they should be. Each has the knowledge required to make each client's journey easier, less stressful and more successful.

Apart from these things, why are they unique? Because in each case, they left another fertility center and came to us asking if they could become a part of what they believe will soon be known as the finest, most advanced fertility center in the world. Below we will introduce you to the Medical Director, the Director of Research, and the Laboratory Director aof Gen 5 Fertility. If we work together with you in the future, you will meet the other outstanding members of our staff.

Samuel Wood, m.d, ph.d., m.a.,m.b.a., hclD/CC(AAB), FACOG

Dr. Wood is a one of the leading fertility specialists in the world. He has helped patients from all continents (except Antartica) have the babies they desired.

As can be seen below, it is highly unlikely that any other fertility specialist in the world can match his array of credentials.

Dr. Wood is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and world-renowned fertility specialist as well as an expert in reproductive genetics with over 25 years of clinical experience. Dr. Wood is the only fertility specialist in the U.S. who has the honor of being a longtime listee in three Marquis’ publications: “Who’s Who in America,” “Who’s Who in the World,” and “Who’s Who in Science & Technology.” His clinical skills have won him many accolades including being named a "Top Doctor" by U.S. News and World Report, a "Super Doctor" by and has earned ratings of "Superb" (9.8) by the Avvo physician rating service and 4 out 4 stars on the patient-based rating site He was named one of the “50 People to Watch” by San Diego Magazine and one of the 20 "Men who Impact San Diego" by San Diego Metropolitan Magazine. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Medical Society.

Dr. Wood’s distinguished academic background also includes an M.A. in Psychology, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, as well as an M.B.A. After a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina, he completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UCSD and is Board Certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility achieving both in the quickest possible time. He has also earned the honor of being a certified High Complexity Laboratory Director (HCLD) by the American Board of Bioanalysts (AAB) in two separate areas. He has published numerous scientific papers in multiple areas of study. His academic credentials are not surprising given that he is also a longtime member of Mensa, the society for individuals with a documented high IQ.

Dr. Wood also has extensive media experience having been featured on numerous local and national print, radio and television news pieces including the “New York Times,” “Newsweek,” “Vogue,” “Cosmopolitan,” “Dr. Oz,” “The Doctors,” “World News Tonight,” “NBC Nightly News,” “Good Morning America,” “The Today Show,” “ABC’s World News Tonight,” PBS’ “Frontline,” and a BBC documentary seen worldwide, as well as all major television outlets in San Diego and many others across the country. Over the past few years, he has appeared on over 100 local and national radio, television and print shows. He is frequently featured on local and national morning television segments, which provides insights into the latest research in reproductive endocrinology/infertility, stem cell research, behavioral endocrinology, reproductive genetics and medical ethics.

Despite these many accomplishments, perhaps what is most exceptional about Dr. Wood is his gentle, caring nature. He is known by his many patients from around the world for providing each patient with highly personalized care. He especially specializes in the fine details of protocols for Chinese patients, whose responses are in many cases significantly different than those of American and European patients. There is perhaps no fertility specialist in the world who knows more about the optimal ways to treat Asian patients.

His current positions include being President and Medical Director of Gen 5 Fertility in San Diego, Laboratory Director of Progenesis, a leading PGS/PGD company, and CEO of Stemagen, a stem cell company renowned for having been the first research facility to therapeutically clone adult human cells.

E.Scott Sills, m.d, ph.d., FACOG,FACS, FRCPI

Dr. Scott Sills is Senior Vice President for Research at Gen 5 Fertility. In addition to his full-time IVF practice with Dr. Wood, his research portfolio includes reproductive genetics, bioethics, minimal access fertility surgery, and health policy. At G5F, Dr. Sills continues his pathbreaking work to standardize ovarian ‘rejuvenation’ using platelet-rich plasma (PRP)—following the first registered clinical trial of its kind, for which he was Principal Investigator (2017-2018).

Dr. Sills obtained his PhD from London’s University of Westminster. He was awarded the MD degree from University of Tennessee in 1992, followed by gynecology residency at NYU Downtown Hospital and a sub-specialty fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Cornell University-New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Sills has practiced IVF both in Europe and the United States, with contributions of international impact. He was Director for Research Programs at Sims Institute-Dublin (2008-2011), where he led his team’s publication output in reproductive biology to a level exceeding all five Irish medical schools combined. In the arena of E.U. public policy, Dr. Sills’ 2009 expert brief clarifying the status of non-transferred embryos correctly anticipated a landmark Supreme Court decision with major implications for fertility practice. His IVF data were included in the NHS’ Clinical Guidelines for Fertility Assessment & Treatment (London, 2004), while his paper on identical twins was cited by the World Health Organization’s “Current practices in ART” (Geneva, 2002). The New Zealand Ministry of Health incorporated Dr. Sills’ paper on assisted hatching in its national IVF guidelines (Wellington, 2005), and his Lancet report detailing asylum for forced sterilization victims (1998) was hailed by the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees

Other highly cited works by Dr. Sills include the first description of Irish births from dual anonymous gamete donation (2010), the world’s first report on IVF births in premature ovarian failure using oocytes donated from a twin sister (2010), as well as Ireland’s first deliveries after frozen surgically-retrieved sperm (2011). While on faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dr Sills refined a two-stage sequential embryo transfer technique (2012) with healthy term livebirth—another national first.

Previously, Dr. Sills chaired an international initiative bridging Arab and Israeli fertility clinics across 13 countries—the first network of its kind in the Middle East (2007). He is believed to be the only fertility expert in the world to have delivered invited lectures both in Tehran and at the U.S. Military Academy-West Point.

Books by Dr. Sills include Fighting at the Fertility Front, an infertility guide specifically for U.S. military, veterans, and their partners (2014). His book Screening the Single Euploid Embryo: Molecular Genetics in Reproductive Medicine (Springer AG; Switzerland) collects the worldwide experience to make IVF safer, simpler, and more successful. In 2016, Cambridge University Press commissioned a comprehensive textbook covering clinical practice & international health policy issues edited by Dr. Sills..

In addition to books, Dr. Sills has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and has collaborated on discovery of three previously unknown human gene mutations. He is board certified both by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the National Board of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr Sills is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, American College of Surgeons, and the Royal College of Physicians (Ireland), holding medical credentials in California, New York and the United Kingdom.
