What Can I Expect During an Ovarian Rejuvenation?

Jun 14, 2024
Ovarian rejuvenation might sound like a very involved procedure, but it’s actually very simple. We’re happy to remove the mystery from this process and let you know what to expect.

If you’re trying to conceive a child and you’ve had some difficulty, many options can allow you to build the family of your dreams. One of these is ovarian rejuvenation, a procedure many people are unaware of and unsure what to expect if they choose it.

Fortunately, at Gen 5 Fertility Center, we offer three different types of this treatment and provide plenty of information about how they work. We’re the only fertility clinic in the United States focusing on the research and results of these procedures and the world’s only clinic offering generation 4 ovarian rejuvenation.

Dr. Samuel Wood, Dr. Benito Villanueva, and Dr. Martin Bastuba know how important it is to plan your family and be informed about what specific fertility procedures will entail. That’s why we work hard to ensure all our patients know exactly what to expect from ovarian rejuvenation.

Ovarian rejuvenation: what it is and how it works

Ovarian rejuvenation is a procedure that uses PRP (or platelet-rich plasma), EnPLAF (enriched platelet factors), or both (dubbed ULTRA) to treat premature menopause and other fertility issues. The procedure can involve one of these three approaches to help improve ovarian function and increase the chances of pregnancy.

Though relatively new, having first been introduced in a scientific study in Greece several years prior, this procedure utilizes the long-studied concept of PRP therapy for rejuvenation, healing, and growth. It has created beneficial results for many, such as those in a 2020 study who saw “significant improvement in hormone levels.”

What you can expect from ovarian rejuvenation

The procedure may sound very intense, but it isn’t. It’s painless, requires little aftercare, and has been found to produce impressive results. For many people who want to conceive, this procedure can be a precursor or even an alternative to IVF or another, more intensive process.

A good candidate for ovarian rejuvenation

People who have uteruses and want to conceive naturally may want to find out if they’re good candidates for this procedure. The best candidates are usually in their 30s or 40s and experiencing premature menopause, premature ovarian failure or insufficiency, or low ovarian reserve.

We can discuss this in our San Diego office if you’re a good candidate for this procedure.

What happens during the procedure

We draw your blood and treat it to activate the platelets. The procedure differs slightly depending on whether you’re receiving PRP, EnPLAF, or both (ULTRA).

After we prepare the blood, we inject it into your ovaries through a painless and precise process using ultrasound guidance. You’re awake for the procedure and can go home afterward.

What it feels like

Although the procedure may be uncomfortable, most patients don’t feel any pain because we administer a local anesthetic before the procedure.

Recovery and aftercare

With a treatment like PRP, we use your own blood, considerably minimizing the chance of infection or other issues. Recovery usually doesn’t require any downtime, although you may be a little sore near the injection site the next day. But after that, you should be back to your normal activities and feeling fine.

Results and further treatments

After the procedure, you’ll eventually undergo more testing to determine the results. For most patients, a second procedure isn’t necessary, although further fertility treatments may be, depending on your unique situation.
